The Cuban Missile Crisis

The Greatest Event of a War that Never Happened

America's Side

On October 24th, President Kennedy thought that a way of helping to resolve the situation was to stop the Soviet Union from keep supplying supplies to Cuba. The way the he did this was by putting up a naval blockade around Cuba essentially putting the country in quarantine. After the blockade was set up, Soviet President Nikia Khrushchev sent a letter to President Kennedy on October 26th. The letter stated that the United States should let Soviet ships into Cuba because they weren't carrying an materials that were needed for nuclear missile. He also warned Kennedy to watch what he does because the slightest action could set off a nuclear war.

Cuba's and the Soviet Union's Side

On October 27th, Nikia Khrushchev sent a second letter to President Kennedy. He proposed to remove his missiles from Cuba if the United States removed their missiles from Turkey. President Kennedy quickly agreed to this proposal because it meant that he could save hundreds of millions of lives by just removing their missiles from another country. The United States gave the Soviet Union 2 days to remove the missiles from Cuba. The Soviet Union accomplished this with no problems. Cuba didn't like this because it meant that their military would be extremely weak compared to the United States and they don't have any weapon that they could threaten the United States with. Cuba was still part of the Warsaw Pact though so they were still allied with the Soviet Union.
